Beijing S2 Line “Flower Sea” Train Guide: Best Blooming Season, Viewing Spots, Transportation, and Photography Routes

Every spring, at the foot of the Juyongguan Great Wall, the S2 suburban railway winds its way through fields of pink and white wildflowers—this is what everyone calls the “Train to Spring.”

I’ve lived in Beijing for over a decade and have visited Juyongguan many times during the blooming season. Note two things that are easily confused: riding the S2 Line to experience the sea of flowers along the route and photographing the passing train from the Juyongguan Flower Trail are two distinct experiences—don’t confuse them.

This guide will help you determine the best time to visit, choose viewing spots, plan your transportation, and organize your itinerary. Prepare well before your trip to minimize the chance of a wasted trip.

Juyongguan S2 Line Flower-Viewing Guide

What is the S2 Line Flower Sea Train?

Beijing’s S2 Suburban Railway Line runs along the old Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway, passing by the Great Wall and the ruins of beacon towers. Every spring, mountain peach and apricot blossoms bloom along the Juyongguan–Badaling section, and as the train winds through this sea of flowers, it becomes one of Beijing’s most iconic spring sights.

Note: The operating route of the S2 Line is subject to change; do not rely on past travel experiences.

Best Time to View the Flower Sea Train

The peak viewing period for the Flower Sea on Line S2 is from mid-March to early April. The entire blooming season lasts only about 20 days, making it a spring-exclusive spectacle—miss it, and you’ll have to wait another year.

  • Blooming Schedule: Mountain peach blossoms are the first to bloom in late March, followed by apricot blossoms around the Qingming Festival. The layers upon layers of pink and white flowers create a stunning sea of blossoms, marking the best time to visit.
  • Blooming Season Reminder: The peak blooming period lasts only 1–2 weeks and may be affected by temperature, potentially starting earlier or later. We recommend checking the latest bloom updates before your trip.
  • Best Time of Day: Mornings are the golden hour for photography, with soft, non-backlit light that best captures the delicate pink hues of the flower fields. Additionally, photos of the train passing through in the morning tend to turn out best.

Before you go, check how far along this year’s blooms are

⚠Calendar dates are only historical references; annual temperature fluctuations can cause the blooming season to start earlier or later. If you’re making a special trip to photograph trains against a backdrop of blooming flowers, don’t base your itinerary solely on past years’schedules.

Blooming StageWhat to ExpectTravel Recommendations

Juyongguan Flower Sea Boardwalk: How to Choose Among the 4 Viewing Spots?

The Juyongguan Flower Sea Boardwalk is open to the public free of charge and features several viewing platforms. It is the officially designated area for photographing the S2 train as it passes through the sea of flowers. Different spots are suited for different photographic subjects, and the view may vary depending on the flowering season, crowd levels, and the train’s direction of travel.

Flower Sea Boardwalk Viewing Platform No. 2 (Panoramic Prime Spot)

This spot is ideal for capturing panoramic views of the S-curve and C-curve, offering the chance to photograph the train, a sea of flowers, and a distant view of the Great Wall all at once. However, your view may be obstructed by the condition of the flowers on-site and crowds, so we cannot guarantee that you’ll get the perfect shot every time.

Flower Sea Boardwalk Viewing Platform No. 3 (Classic Sharp Curve)

This location is ideal for capturing dynamic shots of trains navigating the C-curve. The flower fields offer rich layers of depth, and you can use continuous shooting to capture the moment the train passes by.

Flower Sea Boardwalk Viewing Platform No. 1 (Close-Up Impact)

This spot is closer to the railroad tracks, making it ideal for capturing close-up shots of trains and flowering branches, as well as portraits; however, close-up compositions are significantly affected by the growth of the flowering branches and the flow of people.

Watchtower of Building No. 5 (Great Wall and Flower Sea in One Frame; Ticket Required)

This spot is located within the Juyongguan Great Wall Scenic Area, so you’ll need to purchase a Great Wall admission ticket to enter. You may have the opportunity to capture the Great Wall, a sea of flowers, and a train all in the same frame, but the final result depends on the vegetation, flowering season, and the train’s route that year, so it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get the ideal shot.

Tips for Choosing a Viewing Platform

  • If you just want to enjoy the scenery, don’t feel the need to stick to a specific “Instagram-famous” spot;
  • If you want to capture shots of the train on a curve, check the train’s direction of travel in advance;
  • If you’re aiming for a shot that frames the Great Wall, a sea of flowers, and the train together, make sure the watchtowers are open and check the current vegetation conditions;
  • When the area is crowded, follow staff instructions. Do not climb over guardrails or approach the tracks—the railway area is extremely dangerous.

General Photography Tips

1. The train stops at the observation deck for only a short time, so it’s recommended that you arrive at the spot at least half an hour early to avoid missing it;

2. A telephoto lens helps capture distant views and fine details;

3. When composing your shot, include the Great Wall and the beacon towers in the frame to highlight the local character.

How to Take Great Photos of the “Flower Sea” Train with Your Phone: 4 Practical Tips

1. Plan your composition—including the flower branches, railroad tracks, and the Great Wall in the background—; don’t wait until the train arrives to scramble for a shot;

3. Turn on burst mode or be ready to record a short video to capture the train as it speeds by;

4. Only take photos from designated viewing platforms along the boardwalk; do not venture into dangerous, unauthorized areas.

Upon ArrivalFollow official directions to reach the boardwalk entranceAllow time for walking and security check lines
Boardwalk TourChoose viewing platforms based on your photography goalsDon’t blindly try to “check off” every single spot
Waiting for the TrainGet into position early and set up your photography equipment  Past train schedules cannot be directly applied to the current year
End of Tour  Decide whether to continue exploring nearby Great Wall attractions based on your energy levels  Don’t cram too many attractions into a tight schedule

Two Itinerary Options

① Flower Sea Train Only: Focus primarily on the Flower Sea Boardwalk viewing platforms and keep the total duration manageable.

② Flower Sea + Juyongguan Great Wall: Allow more time; confirm Great Wall admission tickets and opening hours in advance.

How to Get to the Juyongguan Flower Sea Photo Spot

⚠Important Notice:

The operating route for Line S2 has been adjusted; Huangtudian Station is no longer the starting station for Line S2; the previous transfer instructions are no longer valid.

Option 1: Take the S2 Line to Experience the “Sea of Flowers” Train

Ideal for: Tourists who want to experience the suburban rail system and enjoy the view of wildflowers from the train window along the route.

⚠Important distinction:

Riding the S2 train to view the “sea of flowers” out the window≠arriving at the “Sea of Flowers” boardwalk observation deck to photograph the train. You cannot reach the photography spots on the “Sea of Flowers” boardwalk directly by taking the S2 train.

1. Travel: The S2 line’s route and stops are subject to annual changes. Be sure to check the official timetable for the current year before traveling to confirm your boarding and alighting stations.

2. Ticket Purchase: Transportation cards and QR codes are accepted; on-site rules apply.

3. Due to heavy crowds during the blooming season, it is recommended to choose an early departure time whenever possible.

4. If you wish to visit the Flower Sea Boardwalk, you must alight at the corresponding station and then transfer to ground transportation; transfer options are subject to changes in that year’s transportation policies.

1. Driving / Ride-Hailing: When using navigation to reach your destination, follow the official announcements issued that year to confirm the recommended parking lot locations, fees, and walking routes to the boardwalk; do not cross highways or railroad tracks to reach the viewing areas. Driving may not be the most convenient option for international visitors, as you’ll need to consider parking and navigation issues.

2. Public Transportation: Take Bus No. 879 to the Juyongguan Great Wall stop, then walk from there; buses run infrequently, and the trip takes a long time.

S2 Line Train Schedule and Key Tips

S2: All daily schedules and plans for additional runs during the blooming season are subject to the official timetable for the current year. Times from previous years cannot be directly used as accurate times for the current year; please do not arrive right at the scheduled time.

Visitor Flow Alert: The area is extremely crowded on weekends and holidays during the blooming season, with overcrowding at the viewing platforms and along the boardwalk. We recommend visiting on weekdays whenever possible to avoid the crowds and enhance your photography and viewing experience.

Equipment Recommendations: There are no shops or restrooms along the entire flower field boardwalk. We recommend traveling light, drinking sparingly, and bringing a small amount of snacks and drinking water. UV rays are strong in spring, so please take sun protection measures and bring a hat and sunglasses.

6 Things to Check Before You Go

1. Confirm whether the Juyongguan Flower Sea Boardwalk is open this year and its operating hours;

2. Check the current bloom status—don’t just rely on past calendars;

3. Confirm the current operating section and schedule for Line S2;

4. Determine the best mode of transportation for you, and check parking and public transit shuttle information;

5. If planning to visit the Watchtower at Building 5, confirm that the Juyongguan Great Wall is open and check admission fees;

6. Estimate crowd levels and walking distances, and plan your return trip.

A Guide to Avoiding Pitfalls on the Flower Sea Sightseeing Train

Pitfall 1: Relying solely on past calendars to predict blooming periods may result in a wasted trip if the flowers have already wilted. Since peak blooming periods are affected by temperature fluctuations, verify recent photos of the actual conditions before traveling.

Pitfall 2: Visiting unofficial locations poses safety risks due to proximity to railroads and highways; use only the official flower field boardwalks and viewing platforms.

Pitfall 3: Arriving at the viewing platform just as a train is passing—trains pass by in a matter of seconds—so be in position at least 30 minutes in advance.

Pitfall 4: Visiting on weekends or holidays results in large crowds and long lines for photos; if possible, prioritize weekdays.
